How to buy (legal) recreational weed on your next vacation to Nevada’s city of sin
On the night of Friday, June 30th, 2017, the clock struck midnight and the calendar flipped to July 1st. At that moment, Nevada State Senator Tick Segerblom made the first purchase of recreational cannabis at Reef Dispensaries’ Las Vegas Strip location, buying a jar of Segerblom Haze (a strain named after the Senator) and some Sherbert from Berner’s Exotikz while a media frenzy surrounded him. At that same moment, a flurry of red, white, blue, and green fireworks skyrocketed from the top of the Reef Dispensaries rooftop, as hundreds of curious new customers wrapped a line around the building. The reason for the celebration? Recreational cannabis had just become legal in Las Vegas, NV.
But with the ushering in of the new law, it raises several new questions for the 41 million tourists that descend upon Las Vegas each year, as well for as the locals that love cannabis. That said, we’re here to help clear the air and answer some of your most frequently asked questions about legal weed in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Is weed legal in Las Vegas, NV?
Yes! Medical marijuana has been available in Nevada for the last couple of years, but recreational sales began in many parts of Nevada on July 1st, 2017. For adults 21 and over, it is currently legal to purchase recreational marijuana in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Reno, and other select parts of the state, as long as you have a valid ID.
Do I need a medical card to buy weed if I am a tourist in Las Vegas, NV?
No, as long as you are 21 years old with a valid ID, you can purchase recreational marijuana without a medical card in Las Vegas, NV. There are some advantages to having a medical card, such as cheaper taxes at the register.
Do medical patients have to wait in recreational purchase lines?
While it is required by law in some parts of the state to allow medical patients to bypass recreational lines, not all dispensaries offer this option. However at Reef Dispensaries, we do let medical patients skip the rec line. A medical card acts as the ultimate VIP line pass at Reef, allowing card holding medical marijuana patients first priority.

Where can I use cannabis in Las Vegas?
Cannabis can be used in the state of Nevada on private property, which can complicate things for tourists. Hopefully we will soon see consumption lounges legalized in Clark County so that Las Vegas tourists are not forced to use cannabis unlawfully.
Is it legal to use cannabis on the Las Vegas strip? In a casino? In a bar?
No, it is not. The state can fine you up $1000 for consuming cannabis in a public place, which is defined as “an area to which the public is invited or which the public is permitted, regardless of age.”
Is it legal to use cannabis in a Las Vegas, NV hotel room?
Using marijuana in a hotel room is up to the discretion of the property. Consuming cannabis on a property that does not allow it can result in being fined and/or kicked out of the hotel.
Is it legal to consume discreet items like marijuana-infused edibles and vape pens in public in Las Vegas, NV?
Technically it is not legal, despite the fact that these items can be consumed discreetly. Doing so can still result in a ticketed fine.
Is it legal to use cannabis in a parked car in Las Vegas, NV?
We have heard the argument that it is okay to smoke in your own vehicle because it is your property, however Nevada law states that it is in fact unlawful to consume cannabis inside a vehicle.
Can I drive with marijuana in my vehicle in Las Vegas, NV?
You are allowed to transport marijuana in your car, as long as it is in a sealed container, stored away from the driver or minor passengers (i.e. the trunk). You can be cited with an open container violation if you do not abide by this rule.
Can you get a DUI for driving high in Las Vegas, NV?
Yes. A police officer may cite you with a DUI if you have consumed cannabis “to a degree which renders the driver incapable of safely driving or exercising actual physical control of a vehicle,” or “if your blood contains 2 nanograms per ml. of marijuana or 5 nanograms per ml. of marijuana metabolite.” [1] Officers have the right to pull you over for driving erratically and even have the right to administer a blood test.
Can I bring weed into Nevada from another state? Can I take weed that I purchased in Las Vegas, Nevada across state lines?
It is federally unlawful to bring any form of cannabis across state lines, whether bringing it into Nevada, or leaving from Nevada with cannabis purchased here.
How much recreational marijuana can I purchase in Nevada?
Nevada recreational customers and medical patients can purchase up to one ounce, per transaction. There is not a limit to how many ounces one can purchase per month, however there is a limit to how much cannabis one can possess, which is:
1. Recreational: Up to 1 ounce of flower.
2. Recreational: Up to 1/8 of an ounce of concentrates or 2975 mg of THC.
3. Medical: Up to 2.5 ounces of flower.
4. Medical: Up to 10,000 mg of THC concentrates.
Can a Nevada employer fire you for smoking weed?
Well, we definitely wouldn’t do it at work. Federally, Nevada employers have the right to fire cannabis users, but your employer may be flexible on this subject. Ask your HR department, if you feel brave enough.
