Renowned cannabis activist Jack Herer (1939-2010) was one of the loudest voices in support of the decriminalization and legalization of cannabis in the United States. He not only ran for president twice (1988, 1992), but also was the centerpiece of a PBS documentary, “The Emperor of Hemp”, a nickname he earned from his contribution to the culture. Herer also authored the book The Emperor Wears No Clothes, which was published in 1973 and has remained in print for over 33 years. The text was instrumental in defining the arguments as to why cannabis should be legal in the U.S., many of which have been used to enact legalization in several states. Jack Herer also has a popular Sativa-dominant strain named after him, as well as an annual cannabis award show called the Jack Herer Cup, which takes place in Las Vegas. Artwork by Dale Edwin Murray.
